At the Calgary Stampeders football game on Saturday, October 23, 2021, Rob McLeod and Sailor the dog, a border collie/whippet mix, worked together for a 109-yard flying disc toss and catch. As Sailor ran into the goal zone to finish the rushing touchdown, the 21,000 spectators at McMahon Stadium went berserk. 

McLeod, a Woodstock native, expressed his joy at adding a new world record. This time for the longest flying disc capture at a live sporting event. This was just another accomplishment on his long list of achievements. Three long-distance catches were made in the stadium by “Frisbee” Rob McLeod and his skilled pooch.

“It was kind of mind-blowing. It happened so fast… the only thought was just to throw and execute with him” says Frisbee Rob. “The people in the stands, I didn’t notice them, I didn’t notice when the fireworks went off. It was pretty surreal!”

The 2021 event, according to McLeod, was the fifth PinkPower game, a tradition between the football club and the Canadian Cancer Society. Sailor joined the football players in doing his part by donning a pink jacket and pink leggings in addition to their wristbands, chin straps, and gloves. 

The clip, according to McLeod, had a lot of views and has immense value and exposure for the Stamps and the CFL. In the future, he aspires to perform with Sailor at other Stampeders gatherings.

Although Sailor is actually someone else’s dog, McLeod and Sailor routinely meet up to compete and train together. If there was a tiny breeze and Sailor could lift the disc higher, according to Frisbee Rob, he could be able to catch the frisbee even further. In a stadium, he believes that 120 to 130 yards are feasible. 

“They call me the fun uncle. I’m the guy who throws frisbees for him and the guy to have fun with. I’ve been competing with [Sailor] for about three or four years. He is six now.” says Rob.

McLeod owns a number of Guinness Book of World Records, including the longest flying disc toss caught by a dog with Davy Whippet in 2012 at a distance of 402 feet. He also holds the longest flying disc throw, dash, and capture on ice skates with a distance of 240.16 feet in 2013.

The disc golfer turned motivational speaker said the football game was a wonderful way to recover after the pandemic caused his public appearances to drop by 90%. McLeod has met with over 135,000 students and toured more than 400 schools, emphasizing physical education, compassion, and getting kids away from electronics. 

While this canine is in his prime, McLeod predicted that he and Sailor will be actively participating in competitions over the coming years.
